University of Oxford AfOx Catalyst Grants provide seed funding to support the development of collaborative research between researchers based in African research institutions and at the University of Oxford.

Catalyst Grants are open to all disciplines. Over the last 5 years, we have awarded over 200 Catalyst Grants that have initiated new collaborations between researchers from more than 100 African institutions with over 50 Oxford Departments.

AfOx Catalyst Grants have enabled the developed of long-term collaboration between researchers in Africa and Oxford. These collaborations have led to significant research outcomes, policy impacts and substantial further funding.

There are two pathways for applying for a Catalyst Grant: AfOx Travel Grants and AfOx Starter Grants.

AfOx Travel Grants

  • AfOx Travel Grants facilitate the creation of new collaborations by supporting travel between African institutions and Oxford. It allows researchers to meet either in Africa or Oxford to work together on shared interests.
  • These grants support various activities, such as workshops, conferences, co-supervision, curriculum development, joint lectures, co-authoring publications, collaborative grant applications, and primary research.
  • The travel grant can be for a duration of 1 to 8 weeks, with a maximum funding limit of £5000.
  • To apply for a travel grant, joint applications must be submitted by academics or researchers based in Africa (at academic or non-academic institutions) and academics or researchers at the University of Oxford.

AfOx Starter Grants

  • AfOx Starter Grants provide funding for activities like early-phase idea development, feasibility studies, public engagement, and primary research.
  • These grants offer seed funding to support the development of sustainable partnerships and enhance applications for longer-term fellowships and funding.
  • AfOx Starter Grants can extend up to 12 weeks and are eligible for a maximum amount of £5,000.
  • To apply for a starter grant, joint applications must be submitted by academics or researchers based in Africa (at academic or non-academic institutions) and academics or researchers at the University of Oxford.
  • AfOx strongly encourages applicants for Starter Grants to carefully assess the necessity of travel before submitting their application.

Requirements:

To be eligible for consideration in the program, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Catalyst Grants are designed to promote sustainable and equitable partnerships between researchers in Africa and the University of Oxford. Your application should clearly demonstrate the mutual benefit of the proposed activities to both collaborators.
  • If applicable, please specify how your project addresses specific challenges related to the Sustainable Development Goals.
  • Grants for both Catalyst Grant categories are awarded with a maximum limit of £5,000 and should involve joint applications from researchers based in Africa, whether affiliated with academic or non-academic institutions, and researchers from the University of Oxford.
  • Catalyst Grants may cover more than two individuals, and additional participants should be listed under the ‘Purpose of the Grant’ section.
  • The primary objective of this scheme is to stimulate the formation of new collaborations, and it is not intended to serve as an alternative means of support for existing collaborations.
  • Doctoral students applying for the program should include a letter from their supervisor or department head, outlining how the proposed activities will contribute to the establishment of sustainable, long-term partnerships between researchers in Africa and the University of Oxford.

Duration and Reward

  • The Travel Grant may be utilized to cover expenses related to travel, whether from the University of Oxford, UK to an institution in Africa or vice versa. This includes travel costs, accommodation, and incidentals, with a maximum funding limit of £5000.
  • The Starter Grant is intended for covering expenses associated with the initial stages of developing new collaborations. These expenses can encompass those arising from a defined research project, feasibility studies, or public engagement activities, up to a maximum of £5000.
  • All applications must explicitly address at least one of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and demonstrate how the proposed activities will contribute to advancements in the chosen field of study, as well as generate broader societal benefits that extend beyond the acquisition of knowledge and understanding in the designated area of focus.

Method of Application

Applicants must provide a concise report within one year of receiving the grant. This report should include details on the following aspects:

  • The activities undertaken,
  • The outputs arising from the collaboration
  • The next steps to be taken, including any long-term collaborative projects arising from the award.
