Scholarship Details for 2024 University of British Columbia Scholarship For International Students

UBC’s International Scholars Program offers four prestigious awards that combine both financial need and merit-based criteria. When you submit your application, you won’t need to choose a specific award; our team will assess your eligibility for all relevant awards automatically.

  • Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award

This award acknowledges outstanding prospective international undergraduate students who exhibit exceptional academic performance and outstanding leadership qualities. These qualities are reflected in their ability to collaborate effectively, show empathy, and actively listen to others. The award recognizes students who have made a positive impact through their participation in school and community service projects, as well as their significant achievements in other academic and extracurricular activities.

  • Donald A. Wehrung International Student Award

This award honors exceptional international undergraduate students hailing from economically disadvantaged or conflict-affected regions. These students have achieved remarkable academic success despite facing formidable challenges, and their pursuit of a university education would be severely hampered without substantial financial support. Applicants are expected to exhibit leadership potential and a profound dedication to effecting positive change within their communities..

  • International Impact Award

This award is presented to outstanding students who have showcased leadership qualities and a strong dedication to addressing issues related to sustainability, climate change, natural resource conservation and management, social justice, equity and inclusion, or societal health and wellness. Preference is given to first-generation learners and individuals from diverse backgrounds.

  • Vantage One Excellence Award

This award is provided by UBC Vantage College for exceptionally high-achieving international students who have not yet met the English Language Admission Standard for direct enrollment at UBC. These awards can cover the entire cost of a student’s academic program and living expenses. Candidates are expected to showcase strong leadership abilities, significant engagement in student activities and community service, and noteworthy accomplishments in academic or extracurricular pursuits

Scholarship Requirements:

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must meet the following criteria:

  • You should be an international student planning to study in Canada with a Canadian study permit.
  • You must be either entering UBC from a recognized secondary school or transferring from your first year at a post-secondary college or another university.
  • Graduation from high school should not have occurred more than one gap year prior to the academic year you are applying for. For example, for the 2024 Winter session, applicants must have graduated from high school no earlier than November 2022.
  • You should be applying for your first undergraduate degree.
  • A high level of academic achievement is required, with a record of achieving all As or an equivalent standard.
  • You must demonstrate a level of financial need that would otherwise hinder you from pursuing a UBC degree. (UBC automatically considers all international students for the merit-based International Major Entrance Scholarships and Outstanding International Student Awards scholarships, with a maximum total value of $35,000 per year. If this amount does not cover your tuition and basic living expenses, you are eligible to apply for the International Scholars Program.)
  • You must meet UBC’s admission requirements, including the general and degree-specific requirements and the English Language Admission Standard.

Scholarship Duration and Reward

The UBC International Scholars Program’s value is contingent on your financial need, which is calculated by summing tuition, fees, and living expenses and subtracting the financial contribution you and your family can provide annually. A typical needs assessment relies on the financial details furnished by you and your family.

The scholarship can be renewed for up to three more years of undergraduate study or until degree completion, whichever occurs first. This extension is subject to you maintaining satisfactory academic performance in your faculty, demonstrating ongoing financial need, and retaining your Canadian study permit (student visa).

Method of Application

  1. Visit the International Scholars Program application page.
  2. Choose your desired academic program and campus.
  • Please note that certain degrees are ineligible for UBC International Scholars Program awards, such as the UBC Okanagan Bachelor of Nursing degree, Bachelor of Dental Science in Dental Hygiene, Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science, Bachelor + Master of Management degree, dual degrees, joint degrees between UBC Okanagan and UBC Vancouver, and joint degrees with other post-secondary institutions.

3. To apply for the International Scholars Program, you need a nomination from your school or a non-profit organization, along with a reference from an academic referee.

Non-profits may only nominate high school students affiliated with their organization. This nomination counts toward the school’s total nominations.
  • Notify your nominator and academic referee of your intention to apply for the International Scholars Program, and inform them of the November 15 application deadline. Your nominator should be your school counselor or equivalent, while your academic referee should be someone familiar with your work, such as your teacher in your chosen field of study.
